To See What is Heard: Concretizing the Spiritual & the Abstract with Yehoshua November
In this generative workshop, we will look briefly at Jewish mystical teachings that explore the relationship between imagery and abstraction during the Mount Sinai experience. Then, taking our cue from these teachings and contemporary poetry, we will attempt to harness the dynamic interplay of imagery and abstraction as we work toward generating a few new poems of our own.
Author Event & Reading:
7-8:30 PM
Join us for an evening of reflection Yehoshua November shares work from his debut collection, LA Times Book Prize 2010 finalist God’s Optimism. As a devout Chasidic Jew, November’s writing strips away the layers of religious tradition to reveal the raw, unspoken truths behind the rituals and garments. His work invites readers to see beyond the surface, offering a profound glimpse into the intersection of faith, identity, and the human condition. He will also read selections from his other books – The Concealment of Endless Night and Two Worlds Exist.
His work has been featured in The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Poetry Anthology, The Chicago Tribune, Harvard Divinity Bulletin, The Sun, Virginia Quarterly Review, TriQuarterly, and on National Public Radio and Poetry Unbound. November teaches creative writing at Rutgers University and Touro University.
