On February 5, 1911, the second Missouri State Capitol was destroyed by fire. A bolt of lightning hit the dome of the Missouri State Capitol, sparking a fire that tore through the building. Firefighters across mid-Missouri rushed to Jefferson City to try and save the building.
Many of the fire towers are being closed, removed, and relocated, so this is a good time to find one to climb for the best views in the state.
St. Louis officially organized citizens into fire companies. All able-bodied men were required to keep two sturdy buckets on hand and be ready to serve.
