 First Day Hikes – Various Locations  

Missouri State Parks invite you to welcome 2022 with a free guided stroll. Join the Jan. 1 excursions to explore the region’s wildlife, geologic features, and history. Registration is required. Kansas City-area hikes include:

Katy Trail State Park – Rock Island Spur, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Knob Noster State Park, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Lewis and Clark State Park, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Wallace State Park, 1-2p.m.

Weston Bend State Park, 10-11:30 a.m.

“An Artist at Home in America: Michael Mardikes’

Kansas City Public Library – 14 W. 10th Street

In 1955, Thomas Hart Benton opened his Kansas City home and studio to photographer Michael Mardikes. Throughout his time with the famed painter, Mardikes captured 1,080 photos spanning Benton’s personal and professional life.

Thirty-two of Mardikes’ photos are on display in the library’s Mountain Gallery through May 15, 2022.

On January 20, Mardikes will sit down with his nephew and fellow photographer, Nick Vedros, to share his experiences with Benton. RSVPs are required to attend the program in-person. The event will also be streamed online.

 

Let’s Wine About Winter – 118 N. Main Street, Suite C, Liberty

The winter months can take a toll, so this 12th annual event in downtown Liberty comes just in time for a break from the cold. On February 19 from 1-5 p.m., more than 20 wines will be available to sample. Participants receive a commemorative tasting glass. Tickets are on sale now for $30. Day-of tickets, pending availability, are $35.

Sip on beer, wine, and seasonal cocktails or grab a bite from a food truck at misc., a new taproom and event space. While the venue can be rented for private gatherings, there are also ticketed activities for the public, such as the New Year’s Cocktail Class on December 30, the Dry Mocktail Class on January 5, and Disney Trivia Night on January 28. Mimosa Market, a chance to enjoy the popular sparkling wine and orange juice mixture while shopping local vendors, will take place every fourth Saturday from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. starting January 29.

Nighthawk – 1229 Baltimore Ave., KC

 Every Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m.-3 a.m., the basement of Hotel Kansas City turns into Nighthawk, a new music-focused bar concept. A large stage and state-of-the-art DJ booth ensure that auditory entertainment is the main event.
