Running for a limited time November 16–17 is Lone Jack Historical Society’s annual escape room adventure, “Hiding in Plain Sight-The Pinkerton Detectives & the Crookfield Case.”
“We started the Escape Room almost 10 years ago as a fund raiser for the Lone Jack Museum,” says Alinda Miller, president of the Lone Jack Historical Society. “While Jackson County Parks + Rec owns the site, the Lone Jack Historical Society, with a MOA with the County operates it and funds it.”
Each year, the The Lone Jack Historical Society plans an escape room adventure to raise money for its museum and operations. This year’s theme, which actually happened in the city of Lone Jack in 1935, has visitors (acting as the Pinkerton Detective Agency) journey through a robbed general mercantile littered with clues left behind by thieves, the Crookfields. The Historic Lone Jack website sets the scene:
“The year is 1935. A band of thieves have been terrorizing businesses across southern Jackson County. They recently robbed the general mercantile store in Lone Jack, and even blew open the safe and made off with a huge sum of money! The Pinkerton Detective Agency has been brought in to solve the case! There are reports that one of the robbers left clues to the location of their secret hideout hidden within the store for one of their band to find. The crime scene holds all the secret answers! You and your team have been assigned to this case by the detective agency. You must solve this mystery before the bad guys get away! Can you do it???”

“Since we are a Lone Jack history based organization, it only makes sense to use actual events in and around Lone Jack as our inspiration. It’s one way to teach our local history in a fun way,” Alinda says. “We certainly have no lack of choices, Lone Jack’s history goes back to the early 1830’s. At the end of each one, we provide the participants with a printout of the actual event so that they can read more about it.”
This event is only running for two days this month, November 16–17, so interested parties should grab tickets quickly. Available time slots for November 16 include 3 PM, 4:30 PM, and 6 PM. Available slots for November 17 include 12 PM, 3 PM, 4:30 PM, and 6 PM. Parties have a minimum reservation number of two guests and a maximum of six. Attendees under the age of 16 are required to book alongside an adult.
Though there’s only one weekend left this November to participate, Alinda says that the Historical Society “always offer the same escape room in April in case anyone wasn’t able to come in November. Every November we offer a brand new escape room, with brand new clues because a vast majority of our participants come back every year.”
