Alter your plans and visit Tuxedo Park STL Bed & Breakfast in Webster Groves. This unique bed-and-breakfast is hosted in something holy: a church.
The building that houses the bed-and-breakfast was originally a nondenominational Christian church in the 1890s. From there, it transferred hands to different church groups until 2006, when it was abandoned. In 2018, Bill and Maureen Elliott decided to give it new life by opening it as an inn while honoring the church’s past. The couple kept the church’s original stained-glass windows, installing replica late-Victorian base molding and trim, and restoring the bead board ceilings.

The largest sanctuary, now used as a common area, was built in 1908 and has Craftsman-style woodwork and furniture. The original sanctuary, which is shaped like a slice of pie, is where the kitchen resides. The four rooms that visitors can stay in were once the church’s classrooms, now complete with charming fireplaces, antique furniture, and private bathrooms. Those who nestle up in the inn can dine on made-to-order breakfast, which can be modified to meet dietary restrictions.

“The thing that we have found the most exciting has been all the previous congregants that now have heard that we’ve turned it into an inn, and they’ve come to stay with us for milestone birthdays, like their 80th and the 90th birthdays and 50th anniversaries. And they usually bring us pictures and things of their memories at the time when they were here decades ago with the church,” Maureen says.

Situated near Route 66, the inn has seen its fair share of local, national, and international travelers.
“We have a lot of Germans who travel from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66, so I get a lot of Germans here as a stopping point on their journey,” Maureen says.
For those making the stop, be sure to embrace the timeless architecture and pet the innkeeper’s two labradors, who welcome guests.
