Weird and wacky pet chews are the name of the game at Barkin’ Barrel Boutique. Located in Columbia, this store offers the odd and unusual—from kangaroo arms to frog legs to cow snouts—for your furry friend to enjoy. Pamper your pooch with a variety of treats from the boutique.
Mandy Crane, owner of the Barkin’ Barrel, likes to provide treats and chews that no other store in the area offers and discovers them by attending expos and meeting with sales representatives.
“I’ll think in my mind, and I’ll be like, ‘Okay, I want to try something new and different,’ ” Mandy says. “I knew kangaroos [were] really good for dogs with allergies.”
She uses her past experience as a veterinary technician to provide the best food for dogs as possible.
“I’m a giant animal lover,” Mandy says. “I would love to open up a retail [store] with unique things that you can’t really find and just different, healthier treats for dogs.”
Wilson, resident greeter and master shedder, is also a fixture of the shop. Mandy’s three-year old Olde English Bulldog loves the cow snout chews and giving every patron a tail-wagging welcome.
Other than the Wilson-recommended products, the store also carries a single brand of dog food: American Natural Premium. Mandy chose this brand based on her knowledge of nutrition.
“Dogs that come in that are having itchy issues or something like that, I can point them to this food and educate them about beef and chicken being an allergy issue nowadays,” Mandy explains. “It’s a good quality product and [will] maybe get them on the right track to getting those allergies underway.”
Something that sets Mandy’s place apart from other pet supply stores is its boutique offerings. In addition to the chews and treats, Barkin’ Barrel also sells shampoos, dog magnets, bakery items, cannabidiol (CBD) products, and dog clothes with matching human looks. Also, there are grooming services available on-site for dogs and cats through Shampooches Grooming.
Mandy also makes it her personal mission to educate her staff so they are able to help customers make informed decisions about what to buy for their pets who may struggle with allergies, be picky eaters, or have sensitive stomachs.
“I like seeing people happy about coming in and being able to afford to spend money on their dogs and not have to pay an ungodly amount for their treats,” Mandy explains.
