The book swap will be from 6–8 PM on January 30. Participants must bring at least one book to swap with others and may take home up to four new-to-them books at each swap. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $5 each. The book swap is limited to 35 people.

“My goal with the events is to create an environment where readers and book lovers can meet new people and expand their reading horizons by picking up a book they may not have considered otherwise,” says Lauren Guminger, the local volunteer host for the book swaps. “It’s also very important to me that book swaps be held at local venues—coffee shops, breweries, community spaces, etc. Every book swap event keeps books and consumer dollars in our community.”

At the venue attendees are encouraged to purchase drinks or food to support the venue. Participants receive Kansas City Book Swap Society bookmarks and stickers at the events, and any books left over after a swap are donated to Little Free Libraries around the Kansas City metro area.

Book Swap Society was founded in Denver by Nicole Wiebe in 2022. The Kansas City location was founded in September 2024. This book swap is only the fifth one they have ever had.

“The coolest books found at a book swap so far are some “vintage” books, I believe from somewhere around the 40s to 60s, which were beautifully bound and honestly looked like works of art,” Lauren says. “I am also always impressed by people’s willingness to swap bestsellers and new releases, and nice hardback books. Everyone is so excited to pass along a book to someone new that people tend to bring pretty high-quality books.”
