Missouri History Today

Missouri History Today April 13, 1933: Bonnie and Clyde evade Joplin police, killing two officers who responded.

When neighbors suspected bootleggers were operating out of a garage apartment in Joplin, they called the authorities to look into it. Turns out there were no bootleggers –

just the infamous crime couple Bonnie and Clyde!   A gun battle erupted at their rented bungalow in Newton County, now E. 34th Street in Joplin, and two of the responding Joplin officers were killed.   Based upon content from the book Missouri 365: This Day in Missouri History by John W. Brown, broadcaster and Missouri historian. Get your copy at Reedy Press. Photo from Unsplash
