Missouri History Today November 27, 1915: Trial Vindicates State Auditor John P. Gordon

by Missouri Life

The St. Joseph Observer publishes a Page 1 report on the acquittal of State Auditor John P. Gordon, whose trial had wrapped up recently over allegations he illegally reimbursed himself with state funds totaling just over $1,200. Gordon testified he had indeed used all funds in question to (quite legally) attend a convention of state auditors in Salt Lake City. The headline reads, “Could Not Down Him,” adding Gordon was the first state auditor to face  criminal charges since 1891.
