A bike ride along the Katy Trail takes you through the heart of Missouri, which is the heart of America. Ride through pastoral farmland, meadows full of wildflowers, and dense forests, and explore charming small towns. Much of the ride is shaded by trees intertwined over the trail.
Enjoy lengthy stretches riding alongside the storied Missouri River, watch for barges, and cross the bridges over dozens of creeks and waterways that feed into the Big Muddy. You’ll cross the majestic Missouri River on a dedicated bike path at Boonville. Keep an eye on the sky for eagles soaring along the towering river bluffs, watch for the geese and ducks which nest along the trail, and explore a handful of caves, a trail to an overlook, and fascinating rock formations. Stop at historical markers that explain the progress of Lewis and Clark up the river.
But wait, there’s more! See Native American petroglyphs. Zip through a railway tunnel at Rocheport. Stop for a cold one at breweries and wineries alongside the trail. See a couple of the original depot stations at trailheads in Sedalia and Boonville; the latter town also has a unique lift bridge, which raised up to let river traffic pass under. A walkway out to the bridge and over the river allows you to see it up close.
The BAM [Bicycle Across Missouri] experience is one of the best ways to ride the Katy. Worry-free and hassle-free, your hotel reservations will be made for you and your luggage will be shuttled between stops, or you can camp at our provided spots in each town, with a place to shower every night and hot coffee in the morning. You’ll be trailed by an experienced bike mechanic, provided with a SAG ride if for any reason you wish to shorten the day’s ride and rest part of a day. Enjoy music and complimentary beer every evening with your new friends and fellow bikers as you trade tips and stories. And we’ll shuttle you to where your car is parked, either at the beginning or ending point of the ride.
There are 26 trailheads along the route, most with water and bathrooms along the way. Many small towns have services along the trail as well that welcome and cater to cyclists. One special rest stop each day will be hosted by a BAM rep, where you can restock water, sports drinks, and snacks. We also call all the restaurants along the way so that they know we are bringing a big group through.
