For the first time ever, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, Parks and Recreation is partnering with local company Jolt Lighting to offer Winter Magic in Swope Park, a premier Christmas drive-through lights experience on Oakwood Drive.
Winter Magic comprises ten themed areas on its mile-long drive. It boasts the longest animated light tunnel in the Midwest, along with sections dedicated to the 12 Days of Christmas, a toy workshop, and a stained-glass nativity, among others. Highlights include spinning trees, lighted spheres, lighted animals in the zoo area, and the KC Proud section, plus a trippy candy blacklight area and Pixel Town.
One of the season’s favorite characters, Santa Claus will also make an appearance at Winter Magic each week. Monday nights from 6-8 PM he will wave to children as they pass his area and collect letters in his mailbox.
Event organizers are also making sure to accommodate those who are anxious about their exposure to COVID-19. A pay-ahead online ticketing system and contactless, onsite ticket scanning will be used for contactless entry. Display the ticket (one $20 ticket per car load) through a closed vehicle window, and a ticket taker will scan the ticket through the glass. A designated day and time slot is also required at time of ticket purchase. A percentage of proceeds will go to benefit KC Parks Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, which ensures all local children have access to summer learning and fun.
While many holiday experiences are closed this year, City of Kansas City, Missouri, Parks and Recreation is providing a new Christmas tradition alternative, giving the community a bright option for a fun-filled, holiday family experience – Christmas in the car!
