Inventor William Lear is Born Near Hannibal: June 26, 1902

William Powell Lear was born on this date near Hannibal. Lear was an American inventor, entrepreneur, and engineer, renowned for his contributions to aviation and the development of various technological advancements. In the realm of aviation, Lear made his most lasting impact. In 1963, he founded the Lear Jet Corporation, which produced the Learjet, the first successful business jet. The Learjet was notable for its speed, range, and ability to operate from smaller airports, making private jet travel more accessible to business executives and wealthy individuals. Lear’s innovations in jet technology not only advanced business aviation but also influenced commercial and military aircraft design.
