It is time for Missouri birdwatchers to take flight over to Martha Lafite Nature Sanctuary in Liberty. This nature sanctuary is hosting an event that allows bird enthusiasts to walk along the trails at the nature center to identify early spring migratory birds. The free Bird Field Trip event will be at 9 AM on March 23rd.

“We bring awareness to birds in the area, with hikes and walks for the community. Bird identification isn’t so important, but understanding the diversity of our local birds is important, primarily to keep us connected to what makes this area so rich and robust in bird diversity,” Sally Urdang, a Master Naturalist with the Osage Trails chapter and tour guide for the birdwatching field trip. “We also want to bring awareness to things that may affect our diverse bird populations and hope that having public hikes and walks will connect participants with what they can do in their own backyards, to help support our species.”
As a group, visitors will be looking for eastern phoebes, woodpeckers, mockingbirds, raptors, sparrows, and more. The event is open for all levels of birdwatchers!
The event is hosted by the Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City. Ten to 20 people are expected to attend.
“This is an opportunity to connect with a new area if you haven’t been to Martha Lafite and also is a way to see some of our first migratory birds in the Kansas City area,” Sally says.
Attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars, warm clothes, and hiking shoes. The walk is weather permitting.
