November 23, 1791
Philanthropist John O’Fallon was born on this day. He established the O’Fallon Institute which is now Washington University. He built and donated new buildings to St. Louis University. He also started and served as the first president for three important railroads. Many things including O’Fallon, Missouri are named for him.

This date in Missouri history. A new church in Les Petites Cotes (Village of the Little Hills) was named San Carlos Borremeo on this day. The village around the church changed its name on this day also. It was named for the church and called San Carlos de Misury. In 1803 it was changed to St. Charles.

The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy opened in Rolla. It is now the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
November 23, 1867
It was reported that New Yorkers in Kansas City hotels were hoping to eat some buffalo meat. One hotel restaurant served them roast pork and, thinking it was buffalo, they went away happy.
