The Space Shuttle Discovery launched one of the most powerful observatories into space on this date in 1990 – The Hubble Space Telescope. Now a household name, few people at that time knew the Missouri connection.
The telescope was named for Edwin Hubble, known as the “Father of Modern Cosmology.” Hubble grew up in Marshfield before becoming a world leader in astrophysics.
