Residents of St. Louis County vote to turn land donated by Ralph Clayton and Martin Hanley–both Missouri transplants from Virginia–into the county seat. About 3,000 people convened on the land early the next year to set down the cornerstone of the new $25,000 courthouse in what is now the City of Clayton, according to a history on the city’s website. This photo shows Gene McNary being sworn in as St. Louis County Supervisor on Jan. 2, 1975, in Clayton.
