by Missouri Life

The Missouri General Assembly approves the state’s first liquor law, banning Missourians from selling alcohol to Native American peoples, according to a Missouri Senate history. Violators faced fines between $30 and $150, along with jail time up to 30 days. This photo shows famous prohibitionist Carry Nation of Belton in northwestern Missouri. She and her followers went to jail many times for entering bars and saloons and attacking them with bricks, hatchets, and rocks, according to the State Historical Society of Missouri.
