On this date one year ago, an Amtrak Southwest Chief train hit a dump truck at a public crossing and derailed near Mendon.
Four victims died, including the driver of the dump truck the train hit, as well as three passengers on the train.
There were 243 passengers 12 crew members onboard at the time. The train had eight cars in total, and seven derailed. The crash site was a “passive railroad crossing” on a gravel road, meaning there were no gate arms or lights.
