Maitland farmer David Ward King is born. He went on to invent the King Road Drag, a horse-drawn device that graded roads so mail could be delivered to rural areas. It also enabled cars to travel smoothly. This image shows horses pulling a road-grading machine in Cedarhurst, Long Island, New York around 1900. It’s unclear whether this is one of King’s machines, though one can imagine it looked similar.
