Union volunteers known as Berry’s Battalion of the Missouri Cavalry fought in the Siege of Lexington, Mo., beginning on this date and continuing through to the surrender on Sept. 20. Five in the battalion eventually died, including three killed in conflict and two from disease, according to a history from the U.S. National Park Service.
