This isn’t your ordinary garage sale. Relics Antique Mall in Springfield is gearing up for its Amazing Garage Sale, a three-day thrifting extravaganza featuring more than 100 vendors. Come for the deep discounts, stay for the taco truck.
Calling all treasure hunters. Make room in your cars and mark your calendars for the Amazing Garage Sale, to be held October 4 – 6 in the Relics Event Center at Relics Antique Mall in Springfield, Missouri.
The Amazing Garage Sale has been described as a “good old-fashioned garage sale with low-to-go prices.” But here’s the thing: It’s huge. More than 100 sellers will set up in their allotted spaces. On top of that, Relics Antique Mall boasts more than 500 permanent booths. It’s a bonafide bonanza of secondhand goodies.
Relics Antique Mall owner Beverly Robb says the inaugural event was organized to allow antiques dealers an opportunity to clear out any overabundance of inventory.
“As dealers ourselves, we knew that what most dealers have in common is a love of buying. This love can result in an overflowing home and storage spaces,” Robb says. “We wanted to provide our dealers with an easy way to move some of the excess, and normal garage sale items, too. Thus, Relics Antique Mall’s Amazing Garage Sale was born.”
And it was a surprise success.
“We had no idea if anyone would come to our first one at Relics, which was about 13 years ago,” Robb says. “We were pleasantly surprised when thousands of people showed up for the three-day event.”
Recent garage sales have brought in as many as 10,000 shoppers, who come in search of deeply discounted electronics, sporting goods, clothing, jewelry, furniture, tools, kitchen appliances, kitchen appliances, cookware, home decor — you name it.
And then there’s Relics itself. At 90,000 square feet, it’s the largest antiques mall in Missouri. Robb says the mall is divided into two sections. In order to display their goods in the antiques section, dealers must ensure that at least 90% of their products are verified vintage or antique. Then there’s the Fun Flea Market section, “where nearly anything goes and bargains abound,” Robb says. “Relics truly has something for everyone, from museum-quality antiques to vintage T-shirts, to Amazon overstocks.”
While the garage sale vendors are serving up sweet deals, the El Sabor de Mexico Taqueria food truck will be serving up authentic street tacos, tamales, and tortas. Shopping does, after all, work up an appetite.
For those new to the world of thrifting, some tips:
- Make a list of things you’re on the lookout for, but come with an open mind. You never know what you’ll find.
- If you’re shopping for furniture, bring a tape measure to ensure your finds will fit in your space.
- Comfy clothes are a must, especially if you’ll be moving heavy items.
- And remember that old adage about the bird and the worm. “As with any garage sale, getting there early helps,” Robb says. “However, many of the garage sale vendors add more items each morning of the sale.”
