The Heavy Anchor, a local dive bar in St. Louis, is hosting their first ever “Unplugged Night”—a night of coloring, crafting, games, and of course, no phones.
Owners of The Heavy Anchor, Josh & Jodie Timbrook, say that they will be providing activities for the night including the following:
– Adult coloring books & colored pencils
– 20+ board games
– A book exchange full of books to read
– Sega
– NFL Blitz
– Foosball
– Pinball
“We hope to provide a phone-free space for people to unwind & connect with each other. It’s a night of coloring, crafting & games,” Jodie says. “I’ve been to some concerts where the artists request attendees not use their phones. I thought it was honestly a nice break from the tether of constantly being on a screen. It forces you to participate and enjoy the moment, rather than try to capture it with a photo & post it online. When we are looking at our phones every 5 minutes, we’re not really connecting with the people, space & environment around us. As a business owner, I am very guilty of this. In this world, it is not feasible or realistic to be without your phone all-together, but I thought it would be a nice experience/experiment to have an event where the collective group removes the screen from the equation & just enjoy each other’s company. And what better time to try an unplugged event than the beginning of the new year, as everyone is striving to set & reach their personal resolutions?” says Jodie. As this is a bar, the Unplugged will be for ages 21 and up.
People are also welcome to bring their own crafts to share with other attendees, including knitting or crochet, origami, paper crafts, collage, and more.
In typical fashion during the event, the bar itself will be running through the night. “We will be open from 5pm-1am, like normal,” Jodie says. We host an event every day of the week, whether it’s Comedy Open Mic, Trivia, Karaoke or a concert. We love hosting new events. We’ll offer all our usual fare: 30+ beers, House & Seasonal Cocktails, N/A Options, etc.”
The Unplugged event is free to attend, and runs from 6 PM January 8th to 1 AM January 9th.
