A large tree with dense white blossoms stands in a grassy area, surrounded by green shrubs, under a clear blue sky. The tree is fully in bloom, indicating springtime.

The flowering dogwood was chosen as Missouri’s official tree.

The eastern bluebird became our state bird. This red, white, and blue species is different from the all-blue western bluebird.

Hawthorn Missouri State Flower

The hawthorn was selected as our state flower on this date in 1923.

Tall stalks of grass with dark seed heads are shown in the foreground, set against a bright blue sky and a grassy field with trees in the background.

Big bluestem was named by the state legislature as our official grass.  This followed the lobbying efforts of fourth graders at Truman Elementary school in Rolla.

A fossilized crinoid, consisting of a segmented stem and a flower-like calyx, embedded in a slab of brownish rock and displayed upright with metal supports.

Students from Lee’s Summit got the crinoid named Missouri’s official fossil. The little animal that looked like a plant lived in the ocean that once covered Missouri.
