Sudwerk Brewing Co. has been creating high quality craft lagers in Davis, California, since 1989, and to say that all things bicycles are in Sudwerk’s roots might be an understatement — the company logo even displays the California bear riding an old school penny-farthing bicycle. The brewery was established by two University of Missouri-Columbia alumni, two Missouri S&T-Rolla alumni, and three others from the St. Louis area, and all pay homage to their roots with a new brew, the Hindman Junction Session IPL.

Since biking holds such significance to the brewery, a partnership with Columbia-based PedNet Coalition made sense. PedNet is a nonprofit transportation advocacy organization that provides walking, biking, and transit solutions to meet people’s everyday transportation needs. After three years, PedNet and Sudwerk advanced their collaboration and created a beer to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the Katy Trail in 2020. Hindman Junction is the intersection of Missouri’s statewide Katy Trail with the MKT Trail, the gem of Columbia’s trail system. PedNet’s founders were heavily involved in advocating for both trails, but no one had more impact than Darwin Hindman, the junction’s namesake. Named the “Father of the Katy Trail,” Hindman helped lead the advocacy and fundraising campaign that resulted in the creation of the 240-mile trail, and later served as mayor of Columbia for fifteen years. He passed away in 2019.

Hindman Junction Session IPL is a hop-forward, aromatic IPL that is as unique as the place that inspired it. Its hop profile includes Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe, which creates a harmonious blend of piney, citrus, and tropical flavors. It is crisp, dry, and clean and perfect for sitting outside on the patio and soaking in life’s simple moments. Portions of proceeds from all draft and package sales of the IPL will be donated to PedNet.

Sudwerk/PedNet Hindman Junction Session IPL is available through N.H. Scheppers Distributing Co. in Columbia and Jefferson City, through ShowMe Beverage in the greater St. Louis area, Missouri Eagle in Lake of the Ozarks, Nauser Beverage and Lloyd Distributing in Northeast Missouri. Sudwerk distributes exclusively in the states of California, Nevada, and Missouri. For more information, visit SudwerkBrew.com.
