On March 6, 1981: Walter Cronkite’s final broadcast.
St. Joseph native Walter Cronkite became “the most trusted man in America.” He grew up in Kansas City until he and his family moved to Texas. He came back to Missouri for his early years of broadcasting at KCMO radio. Cronkite would go on to anchor The CBS Evening News. He was the trusted source for viewers when President Kennedy was shot and when American astronauts landed on the moon. The public can tour the memorial erected in his honor at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.
