This is the birthday of the "Father of Kansas City," Francois Chouteau. In 1821 he established a trading post just east of what is now downtown. After a flood, he moved to what is now the downtown area.

Cole Younger was paroled from prison after the botched Northfield, MN bank robbery and returned to Missouri on this date. He met with Frank James in Kansas City and organized the "Buckskin Wild West Show."

St. Louisan, Leon Spinks, shocked the sports world when he beat Muhammad Ali in fifteen rounds for the World Heavyweight Crown. He and his brother, Michael, were the only brothers to ever hold world titles.

Birthday of Robert Campbell who, with William Sublette, founded the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. He became one of the richest men in St. Louis. His home, Campbell House is now a Museum.

Edward Maher (a.k.a. Fast Eddie) saw his money run out and then he was captured in Ozark, Missouri. He had been living quietly on the $1.5 million which he stole in an armored car robbery in London, England.
