March 28, 1850
Kansas City is incorporated as a city. The city had three distinct “foundings” and three different names over its history. From Westport in 1830 to the Town of Kansas in later years, and eventually Kansas City in 1850, the city now has a population near 500,000 and is the 23rd largest city in the country.

After existing for a couple decades as a river trading port then briefly being known simply as the town of Kansas, Kansas City added the "City" to its name to avoid confusion with the newly formed territory of Kansas. Kansas City was incorporated as we know it today on this date.
