Missouri History Today January 10, 1870: Missouri Ratifies Fifteenth Amendment Securing Voting Rights

by Missouri Life

Missouri ratifies the Fifteenth Amendment, which prohibits states and the federal government from barring citizens from voting on the basis of a person’s “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The amendment went into effect March 30. This print by Thomas Kelly aimed to illustrate some of the rights of Black Americans stemming from the amendment.
