Missouri History Today January 18, 1864: Provost Marshal’s Order Targets Bushwhackers In Hannibal

The Hannibal-based provost marshal publishes an order to “seize, arrest & bring to this office, or shoot down” bushwhackers and horse thieves disguised as Federal soldiers, according to a document in the State Historical Society of Missouri archives. Such con artists were “prowling about the country, stealing and marauding,” the notice states.
