The official end to American Indian slavery takes place on this date at the conclusion of the case Marguerite v. Pierre Chouteau, Sr. before the Missouri Supreme Court. Marguerite told the court Chouteau had beaten and bruised her. As the case moved through the courts, “the plaintiff in error claimed that the Treaty of Louisiana of 30 April, 1803, protected him in his property in the defendant, as she was his slave,” according to a summary published by Justia.com.
