Famed actor Ed Asner is born on this date in Kansas City (the Missouri side), even though he grows up on the Kansas side of the line, according to a history from the Kansas State Historical Society. He rose to prominence as Lou Grant on the Mary Tyler Moore Show beginning in 1970. Asner, who died in 2021, won seven Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes.
