Union General David Hunter camps near Tipton, a scene commemorated in a sketch by Alexander Simplot, a correspondent. “The troops here are likewise breaking up camp and moving,” he wrote. The division at one point lay under the command of Major General John C. Fremont, who captured Springfield, Mo., but later lost that role because of conflict with the administration of President Abraham Lincoln, according to a history from the Trans-Mississippi Theater Photo Archive. Hunter later assumed command and left Springfield.
