Ten Confederate soldiers are shot after being taken prisoner and held in jails in Hannibal and Palmyra, according to a brief 1902 history book archived on the Missouri Secretary of State’s website. “A thrill of horror echoed back the news to the grief-laden capital of Marion County,” the book notes.
