Born on this date in Tennessee, Charles B. Canole later moved to Howard County, Mo., with his parents, became a farmer, and participated in the California gold rush, according to the book “History of Howard and Cooper Counties, Missouri,” by the National Historical Company, available via public records published by Google Books. Canole held about 200 acres and believed “the majority of those who succeed in life by honest toil owe more to the soil and to the sky than to the hidden treasures of the earth,” according to the book’s author.
