by Missouri Life

Satchel Paige died on this date in Kansas City at the age of 75.  He was such a great player that he was still playing professional baseball at age 59. He played seven seasons for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro League and is considered by many as the greatest pitcher in Negro League history.

This post was contributed by Ross Malone. A historian and a retired school teacher, Ross has authored many books about Missouri’s history, weird facts, and folk tales. He has also written children’s historical fiction. Visit his website, and buy his books in the Missouri Life store.
