May 8, 1898
The St. Louis Motor Carriage Company is founded. The company lasted only eight years, but paved the way for St. Louis to become an early hub for automobile manufacturing. One of its first models was the iconic “Runabout,” which seated four passengers.

Day one of the St. Louis Massacre. General Nathaniel Lyon oversaw his second massacre, this time in St. Louis. Ninety civilians were shot and twenty-eight died. Also shot at by union troops were William Tecumseh Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant. Read more about this in Tales From Missouri and the Heartland.

A mass meeting called for the resignation of state lawmakers who favored the purchase of Forest Park. Opponents said that the park was too far from the city to be of any use and that it was just a playground for the rich.
