Henry Flad, Engineer Behind Forest Park & the Eads Bridge, is Born: July 30, 1824

Henry Flad was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, on this date in 1824. Flad was a prominent civil engineer whose work significantly impacted infrastructure development in St. Louis and the rest of the US.

Making It to the Middle

Immigrants in our history came for the same reasons they do today, but some things are different.


The Magic Chef Mansion was built by Charles Stockstrom, who came to St. Louis from Germany in 1880. He made a fortune in the Quick Meal Stove Company, later renamed Magic Chef. The company was the largest stove maker in the world at one time. The mansion was completed in 1908 and modeled after the Schloss castle in Germany. The mansion is open for tours.
