Miller Huggins, the St. Louis Cardinals manager, was coaching third base with runners on when the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers sent a rookie pitcher to the mound. Huggins said he wanted to examine the baseball and the rookie tossed it to him. The runner on third then scored.

For the first time in baseball history an opening day game was played at night when the Cardinals beat the Pirates in St. Louis.

Birthday of Hall of Fame Cardinals catcher and sportscaster, Joe Garagiola. Joe grew up on The Hill in St. Louis with good friend, Yogi Berra.
September 11, 1974
The Cardinals played the longest game in their history and the second-longest in MLB history. After trailing the Mets 3-1 in the ninth, the Cards came back to tie and then play an additional 15 innings lasting for over seven hours. Finally, at 3:13 A.M., Calloway County's Bake McBride scored the winning run.
