Historically high snowfall for portions of central and eastern Missouri begin on this day and continue through Jan. 13, according to the National Weather Service. Totals of 2 ft. of snow were recorded in Boone, Audrain and Montgomery counties, among other places, and at times, snow fell at a rate of more than 1 inch per hour. Up to 100,000 people lost power and the Missouri State Highway Patrol documented close to 4,000 calls for assistance. This picture shows snowfall from the storm near Columbia.

Missouri was under marshal law and selling liquor was prohibited. In Central Missouri, Lt. Franklin Swope was on a crusade to seize illicit liquor and he seized brandy in three different places including the property of a miller, an army sergeant, and a local judge.
