The Civil War conflict known as the Second Battle of Springfield happens when Confederate Brig. Gen. John Sappington Marmaduke attacks the city. “Springfield was an important Federal communications center and supply depot so the Rebels wished to destroy it,” according to a history from the Missouri Civil War Passport Program. Union forces held their position under the direction of Brig. Gen. Egbert B. Brown. The Rebels retreated.
